More sign petition on part-worn tyres

-

A petition calling for a ban on the sale of part-worn tyres has gathered more than 2100 e-signatures in just over a fortnight.

The National Tyre Distributors Association (NTDA) is calling for the ban, after inspections it carried out over several years showed part worn tyres to have serious safety breaches.

NTDA Chief executive, Stefan Hay, says: ‘Unless drastic action is taken now we are going to see the casualty and death toll rise as a result of illegal and defective tyres.’

While the Motor Vehicle Tyres (Safety) Regulations 1994 govern the sale of partworn tyres, the NTDA says that these are rarely adhered to, allowing unsafe and illegal tyres to flood the UK’s market for part-worn rubber.

Stefan Hay adds: ‘It’s incredibly alarming that so many motorists are choosing to purchase part-worn tyres because they are cheap, despite the distinct possibility that they could be illegal, putting themselves and other road users’ lives in grave danger.

‘That is why we are calling, in the absence of greater enforcement of the regulations or an effective form of industry self-regulation, for a complete ban on partworn tyres.’

The NTDA’s petition will eventually be formally presented to The Rt Hon Greg Clark, MP, secretary of state for business, energy and industrial strategy, in the early part of 2018. Sign the petition here: tinyurl.com/ ccwtyrepetition
