One-off XK150S set to star at Bonhams’ Goodwood Revival sale

A one-of-a-kind 1960 Jaguar XK150S hatchback is up for auction at Bonhams’ Goodwood Revival sale on 9 September, with an estimate of £100,000-140,000.

Bonhams is auctioning the ‘Hartin Fastback’, which was originally sold to solicitor Eric Richardson in 1960. Eric took the needle off the clock of the 130mph sports car, causing Jaguar to fit a 200mph calibrated speedometer, which remains to this day. When Eric’s son grew too tall to sit in the back of the car, rather than sell the vehicle, Eric commissioned Leonard and Ron Hartin to make the conversion from fixed-head to fastback configuration, based loosely on the hardtops of the Sunbeam Alpines and Aston Martins of the period.

In 1990, several owners later, the fastback was bought at auction, in need of restoration. A decision had to be made on returning the 150S to its fixed-head state, or respecting the spirit of the original owner. It was decided to maintain the unique state of the car and prepare it for light competition work. Combined with more recent work by JD Classics, this 150S now boasts a seamwelded chassis, roll-cage, and Aston Martin DB6 wire wheels.

James Knight, chairman of Bonhams’ Motoring Department, says: ‘It is a rare pleasure when classic car owners choose to honour the wishes of the original owner. Having been converted to a fastback to accommodate a growing family, it has remained in this format with only light competition upgrades being fitted.’
