Star’s Nash to sell at face value

£20k enough to bag the Metropolitan Robert Plant bought for Phil Collins

-

‘Phil was very friendly and pleased that it was going to a good home’

A 1958 Nash Metropolitan with incredible rock superstar connections is for sale.

The car was bought by Led Zeppelin’s Robert Plant as a wedding gift for Phil Collins. The car comes with Collins’ name in the logbook and a card in Plant’s own handwriting warning him ‘not to go round corners too fast’.

As the bride was from the US, the car was chosen because of its Anglo American connections.

The seller, Stan McGee from Kent, bought the Metropolitan in 1991. ‘It was offered to me by the Metropolitan Owners’ Club secretary as he had been contacted by Phil Collins to sell the car.’

Stan says: ‘I collected the car from Phil Collins’ home near Billingshurst, Sussex. He was very friendly and was pleased that it was going to a good home. He had a huge barn, where the car had been, that he was going to convert into a studio and accommodation, and that’s why he had decided to sell.’

The Metropolitan was a non-runner and had clutch problems when Stan bought it. Some bodywork restoration was carried out shortly afterwards, and after many years in storage the car was put back on the road in spring last year. The recorded mileage of 29,422 is believed to be genuine. At some point the Metropolitan was fitted with a fourspeed gearbox, said to be a Riley unit.

Stan adds: ‘ This a lovely car with an incredible, documented history’.

Stan is looking for substantial offers for the car, and bids of around £20,000 will be given serious consideration. Form an orderly queue, Led Zep and Genesis fans… Nick Larkin Contact Stan on 01227 749224 or 07710 037767.
