The number of survivors may be dropping but supply still exceeds demand, although the Cavalier’s popularity is starting to increase. Says Cavalier and Chevette Club chairman, Kevin Bricknall: ‘People are realising what a dependable and usable classic the Vauxhall is, which is why they’re now being bought for show and everyday use in equal measure. Prices start at £200 for something basic and tatty – or potentially even less for a project with no mot – and go all the way up to £6000 or £7000 for a really superb Turbo, with the gsi and sri 16v not far behind. There’s demand for mainstream models too, helped by the fact that a good one of these costs just £500-£1200. There are a few autos and while they’re not popular, they’re fine to drive. The diesels are popular too, especially in turbo form as they’re very economical and can easily be converted to run on chip fat.’
