HOW TO BAG THE BEST DEAL

-

1 BODY AND STRUCTURE

The unibody construction was ahead of its time, but replacement panels are notoriously expensive and those corrugations rust from the inside out. Bring a specialist along to your inspection, because it’s vital that you know what you’re letting yourself in for.

2 ENGINES

HY petrol engines don’t have an oil filter, so if it goes more than 1800 miles between oil changes, internal wear can be serious. Blue smoke is the surest sign.

3 TRANSMISSION

Failed clutch release bearings are quite common, resulting in a worn clutch and a big bill – replacement is an engine-out job. Check the condition of the gearbox oil; some specialists recommend changing it every couple of years.

4 BRAKES

Brake drums were gradually enlarged over the years, and are best from 1963 onwards. There are also multiple grease points that need regular attention. Even consumables such as wheel cylinders can set you back hundreds of pounds. Remember, too, that there’s no dual-line braking system.

5 INTERIOR AND ELECTRICS

If you’re planning to use a van for a business, choose a 1963-onwards example with 12v electrics and an alternator. Some vans will have uprated alternators (the standard was 30 amps) to help run extra equipment. Original cotton wiring looms are rare and pretty, but rot easily.
