COG QUANDARIES

-

Two types of gearbox were fitted to the P4. The four-speed manual is the most common, but a semi-automatic Roverdrive ‘box was also offered on the 105R. It’s not weak as such, but wears out and parts are hard to find. An oil change every 2000 miles will prolong a gearbox’s life but rattling when the clutch pedal is pressed suggests shot layshaft bearings. Second-gear synchro wear is common (there was no first gear synchro) – specialists charge around £500 for a rebuilt manual gearbox.
