It’s not weak as such, but wears out and parts are hard to find. An oil change every 2000 miles will prolong a gearbox’s life but rattling when the clutch pedal is pressed suggests shot layshaft bearings. Second-gear synchro wear is common (there was no first gear synchro) – specialists charge around £500 for a rebuilt manual gearbox.
