UK roads may have become dominated by German cars, but it wasn’t always like that; they used to be relatively rare, thanks to their high prices and low equipment levels. If you wanted value for money and a dealer in every town, you went to Ford, Austin-Rover or Vauxhall.

As a result, cars like the Volkswagen Polo MkII have a fairly low profile in the UK. And that’s a shame because while most rivals were churning out tinny hatchbacks that buzzed and whined as they plied Britain’s roads, the Polo’s build quality was a cut above the rest. That superior build quality is reflected in the survival rate; take a look and you’ll find a surprising number of Polo MkIIs still for sale. ‘The Polo’s build quality was a cut above the rest; rivals were tinny’

The ‘ breadvan’ Polo MkII arrived in November 1981, based on the original 1974-on model – also sold as the Audi 50. This was initially the only bodystyle available, but a 1093cc fastback Polo coupé and notchback Polo Classic were introduced in November 1982.

An overhaul in October 1984 saw an array of upgrades, plus a 1043cc coupé and there were more upgrades in 1985, when most got a more durable clutch, exhaust and brakes. Electronic ignition and hydraulic tappets lengthened the Polo’s service intervals; these cars are distinguishable by their side indicator repeaters in the front wings. A major facelift in November 1990 introduced a more modern nose, a new interior, fuel-injection and catalytic converters, plus a more powerful 75bhp GT.
