Tfl investigates T-charge glitch

-

Transport for London (TfL) is investigating a glitch on its website that describes tax-exempt classics as meeting modern emissions standards.

London’s T-Charge came into effect on 25 October. As reported previously in Classic Car Weekly, Historic Vehicles are not subject to the new £10 charge.

But the online T-Charge compliance checker has caused confusion among the classic car fraternity. The webpage is supposed to tell consumers whether or not their car is subject to the charge. And while it does stipulate that historic Registered Vehicles are not subject to the charge, it gives various different reasons as to why.

A stream of owners have had the checker tell them that their classic is Euro 4 standard emissions compliant – even though generally this would only apply to most cars from 2006.

TfL spokesman, Guy Pitt, says: ‘We’re aware of the situation and looking into it.’

TfL wanted to confirm that historic cars are exempt from the charge, and that the online checking tool is still in its early development stages.

The T-Charge is a new levy incurred by vehicles made before 2006 that aren’t registered as historic. It is being used as a way of improving air quality in London. This is in addition to the Congestion Charge zone, which bumps the cost of driving in London to £21.50 for those cars that are affected.
