A vintage end to the season

Cambridge Vintage Sale, Cheffins, Machinery Saleground, Sutton, Ely, Cambs. 14 October

Cheffins’ final Cambridge Vintage Sale of the 2017 season, as previewed in our 11 October issue, had some well-priced items and a few bargains among the Sale Two lots that encompasse­d literature, signs and some vehicles and motorcycle­s at the Sutton Machinery Saleground on Saturday, 14 October.

Despite the noted losses to its bottom left corner, the Fit Avon British-Made Tyres large enamel advertisin­g sign was sold for £480. A more compact double-sided Pratts Perfection Motor Spirit sign went for £220.

The Motorcraft advertisin­g showroom thermomete­r was good for £150.

There were several ‘quantity of’ selections in this sale with one of the best being the box including various oil pourers including Castrol and Shell examples that reached £100. One of the Mobil ‘ T’ shape glass petrol pump globes made £300, while an Avery Hardoll CH1 petrol pump in Shell-Mex livery was away for £600.

A kneeling Spirit of Ecstasy Rolls-Royce bonnet mascot made £340, while a Jaguar/SS mascot was sold for £300.

Among the ephemera on offer in this sale, a smart Oldsmobile colour and upholstery catalogue made a worthy £100, while an equally colourful selection of Oldsmobile brochures reached £45. Someone can have hours of table-top fun with a large quantity of AA, Michelin, RAC etc motorway and road maps bought for just £15.

Describing the overall sale, which included more than 1500 lots, Cheffins’ chairman, Bill King says: ‘ This sale was a great way to finish what has been an incredibly vintage year.’
