THE CHALLENGES OF ORGANISING THE WORLD’S OLDEST CAR RUN
NICK WIGLEY Managing director, Goose Live Events
Nick has organised the run since 2012 and describes it as a unique challenge that he always enjoys. ‘We have a whole team coordinating with the authorities, whether Transport for London, the police or local highways agencies,’ he says.
A particular challenge for the organising team is setting the route. Minor adjustments are often necessary, but they have to be carefully considered first because these old cars struggle with steep hills.
A classic car fan himself, Nick is disappointed he has to drive the run in a modern car every year. ‘I have to be ready to attend an issue at any point on the route and veteran cars aren’t the best for that. Nothing serious has happened in my time, but we have to be prepared.’
Even though he’s only been working on the event for a small fraction of its long history, Nick is well aware of the importance of the Brighton run’s long tradition. ‘It’s not like a new event where you can reinvent things every year, it’s a question of evolution. We always try to make things better every year, but only with incremental changes.’
