Finding a solid example is crucial, so it’s important to check underneath a prospective purchase. First look at the chassis legs and outriggers, focusing on any crusty metal and evidence of previous repairs, along with hastily-applied underseal covering threadbare steel. The rear legs on estates and the point where the chassis passes over the rear axle require particular attention, and don’t forget the jacking points and floorpan. A rotten petrol tank isn’t unusual, either, and its top forms part of the boot floor, so check for damage.
