All of the engines are pleasingly simple, and perfect for the DIYer, so don’t be put off by one needing an overhaul. Listen out for tell-tale rumbles and knocks, and watch for blue exhaust smoke on start-up or on the overrun. Valve-gear and timing chains get noisy but both are cheap and easy to sort. Otherwise it’s a case of ensuring that oil or coolant aren’t leaking, and that both have been changed regularly. It’s also worth asking whether a 1200 model has a 1500 engine; it’s a common upgrade.
