Ferrari: Under the skin exhibition at the Design Museum Tickets from £18

- ❚ designmuseum.org

Around £140 million worth of Ferraris are currently on show inside London’s Design Museum – and judging by the queues to get in, it’s proving to be a pretty popular exhibition.

Like many other venues, the museum is celebrating 70 years of Ferrari. Adorning the foyer is a yellow 365 GTB/4 racing car, welcoming you in. Next, you’ll be greeted by a replica of the first Ferrari road car ever made – the 125S.

There’s not enough space here to name every car featured in the exhibition, but other highlights include a 166 MM Barchetta owned by Fiat boss Gianni Agnelli, and a Testarossa Spider that recently won best in category at a 70th anniversary concours in Maranello.

Aside from the massively expensive and exotic machinery, tales of Enzo Ferrari’s life and the ups and downs of the marque are spot on, as are side details that many may miss. For example, one small plaque shows how the Ferrari logo has changed over the years; it’s always been a prancing horse, but the length of its legs has altered over time. Living up to the name of the museum, Ferrari designers are given due acknowledgement. And it’s not just the cars that feature – a selection of F1 helmets really makes you appreciate how dangerous motor sport was. This is a well thought out and executed event that’s expertly curated. We did spy one mistake, though – an erroneous bhp figure for a Ferrari F40. Perhaps some people accustomed to going to big car shows will complain about the quantity of metal on show, but this a minor issue compared to the quality of what’s there, which is real tour de force. The entry fee of £18 is a small price to pay for Ferrari aficionados, as there are plenty of things in here you wouldn’t see outside Maranello. But it might be a push for the general public, as it will only take you half an hour to get through it. Murray Scullion
