WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

This Minor fires up instantly with a little choke and settles to a watch-like tickover. The gearbox selects ratios precisely, almost sportily, the clutch is light and the steering is exact and assured. The suspension largely ignores rough surfaces and still feels tight. Having stood unused for decades, it has just received a full service – all it needs now is some miles to return some bite to the brake shoes.

BODYWORK CHECK

The Old English White paint is absolutely superb, the only blemish being a small chip on the nearside rear infill panel, which should really be touched in before corrosion starts. The wood has recently been flattened and re-varnished and we could find no soft or damp timber. The frame is in excellent order. The front bumper is original and has faint patina (it’s certainly not pitted), while inspection of the rear original bumper blades confirms the seller’s choice to supply the car with a new pair. The wheel arches and underside are free from welding and corrosion.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

Virtually perfect – in fact you could be forgiven for thinking it has been freshly restored. The only things for a new owner to consider doing are a fresh coat of paint on the heater housing and a new cardboard insert for the driver’s glovebox – the existing one has become detached. The seating, carpets and trim are unmarked and there’s only a hint of ageing to the steering wheel. Open the rear doors and the trim and carpets show no signs of wear or much use; the last tax disc was applied in 2006 and the car has been with the same family (mother and daughter) since 1978. Unfortunately, neither considered keeping any relevant documentation with the car, though the asking price has taken this issue into consideration.

UNDER THE BONNET

The engine bay is one of the few areas on this car that remains largely untouched, and may well inspire the new owner to invest a few hours. The basics are excellent and time spent with polish and some BMC green paint will really improve matters. A few wires would benefit from a tidy up and the SU carburettor has dripped onto the painted panel beneath – nothing that a cutting compound shouldn’t be able to resolve. All the hoses look secure and even the cork rocker cover gasket shows no signs of leaking. With the car not having moved for so long, the seller has carried out a full service and replaced all fluids. The ignition system is original.

THE CCW VIEW

This Traveller has many unique virtues, a consequence of minimal usage and dry storage. There’s very little to criticise and the asking price looks fair.
