Moss, moss, and more moss

- Murray Scullion

This may have been the most disgusting Our Classics piece I’ve ever written. The headline may infer that I visited a High Street suit specialist, but actually refers to the nasty moss and mould growing in my Mazda MX-5’s cabin. It hadn’t spread far, but what could be seen was genuinely revolting. Oddly enough, it manifested itself mostly on the driver’s side sun visor, thereby assaulting my nose instead of protecting my eyes.

Back in February I tackled my mould problem head on – and won. It’s a small victory, and one that was actually more of a sign of my laziness than anything else, but it hasn’t returned either, which is a result. Better still, I’ve since fitted a natty new Momo steering wheel, which is a welcome addition to an otherwise drab and tired interior. So far, so good for the Mazda.

But it has got me thinking. About this time last year, I lost my storage for the car, which meant that it lived outside. Which in turn resulted in the mould. Luckily this year, I do have storage. Huzzah! Coincidentally, I’ve seen my first gritting lorry of the year, too. Owners of classics Nineties performance cars (like me) know that this can be a killer. So, in short, I will learn from my mistakes, take the MX-5 away from the office car park and store it safely away.

My 2018 calendar is looking pretty bare at the moment. However, while flicking fondly through my favourite images of the Mazda, I happened upon an image of me and editor David pounding around the Nürburgring in it.

Consider that a (non-too subtle) hint, Mr Simister.
