TRACTORS TO ANTARCTICA

Three converted Ferguson FE20 tractors reached the South Pole on 3 January – the first time an overland expedition had done so in 46 years, and the first time powered vehicles were used. The mission was headed up by Sir Edmund Hillary – who’d led the successful first Mount Everest ascent five years earlier – and Dr Vivian Fuchs, who was later knighted for his achievements.

NIL NIL IN SWEDEN

England and Brazil made football World Cup history by playing in the

competition’s first ever goal-less match. The Three Lions, having lost several of its players in the Munich air disaster earlier in the year, were considered a weakened but still formidable team in the matches at Sweden, but they failed to make it through to the quarter finals. Argentina, meanwhile, had to borrow yellow shirts from local team, IFK Malmö, for its game against West Germany – having forgotten to bring their change kits with them!

BLUE PETER SETS SAIL

Actor Christopher Trace and Miss Great Britain, Leila Williams, presented the first ever episode of the BBC’s children’s TV show on 16 October. The largely studio-based affair lasted just 15 minutes in its early years. The show’s famous maritime-themed logo – the Blue Peter galleon – was designed by much-missed TV artist, Tony Hart, who was paid £100, and went on to become an occasional contributor to the show.
