‘Can’t believe CCW did a petition against MoT exemption – you should be for it! I’m sure most people are for it, unless they’re all la-de-dahs who can’t even adjust their points. It’s a miracle if my car does 2000 miles a year. What can wear out in that distance?’ stephen Plant

‘Most of the owners of classics of this age have vehicles that are kept in tip-top condition and kept this way to have something to be proud of. This is also to maintain their historic value and interest to others and would be kept this way most times, hence reducing the risk of accidents and breakdowns that seems to be the worry. For all those who still consider that it will be a serious safety problem, may I respectfully remind them that it is still illegal to have a motor vehicle on the road at any time in an unsafe condition, MoT required or not.’ Derek raven

‘As someone who has worked on cars both modern and classic for the last 35+ years, including being an MoT tester, I find the situation regarding taking away the need for a test bizarre at best and downright foolhardy – if not dangerous – at worst. I used to test many pre-1960 cars that were exempt as the owners wanted the reassurance of knowing their cars were safe. I think the DfT saying that modern garages don’t want to test older classics, or don’t have the staff that know enough about classics to test them, is a bit of a lame excuse.’ kevin Plowman
