LOSE YOURSELF IN 1965
CIGARETTE ADVERTISING BANNED ON ITV
ITV viewers had been told ‘Never Go Without A Capstan’, ‘Player’s Please’ or, most famously, ‘You’re Never Alone With A Strand’ for almost a decade. However, cigarette commercials were banned on British television from Sunday 1 August, though it would continue in cinemas for another 21 years. By 1991 the TV ban included rolling tobacco and cigars, which meant no more John Carson richly intoning ‘Happiness is…’.
THE POST OFFICE TOWER OPENS
This was the UK’s tallest building and the first to feature a revolving restaurant. By 16 May 1966 the ‘ Top Of The Tower’ on the 34th floor was open for business, allowing lucky patrons to enjoy Steak au Poivre in a venue that performed a complete revolution in 22 minutes. Butlins ran the venue, and for those on a budget, the price of the ‘Set Lunch’ also included the cost of the lift journey. Alas, it closed in 1980.
THUNDERBALL PREMIERES IN THE UK
The fourth and not the finest of the 007 films – the underwater sequences seem to last forever – does have its enjoyable moments. There’s the one-liner ‘I think he got the point’ after Bond despatches Vargas, the fact that Connery features in the gun barrel sequence for the first time (previously it was stuntman Bob Simmons), the voice of Eric Pohlmann as Blofeld, and the return of the Aston Martin DB5. Oh, and it remains the only Bond picture to date in which 007 rides in a Morris Minor Tourer.
