THE CRUCIAL BELT

-

Engines are tough unless neglected, which is just as well because major components such as cylinder heads are no longer available. Blue exhaust smoke on Turbos is the usual precursor to big bills, but conscientious maintenance on all versions is the key to longevity. Cam belt changes are important – every 50,000 miles or five years is safest, sooner on 16v cars – but you can forget that nonsense about engine removal. Done in-situ, Midlands Car Servicing charges £300 all in for a 20v Turbo. Ticking from cold points to a cracked exhaust manifold, and check oil cooler and pipework for corrosion and leaks – budget £450 to replace it all.
