LEAKS & LOSSES

The transmissions are as tough as the engines, so noisy bearings and synchros are a sign of abuse. Check for a slipping clutch, though, and allow around £400 to have it replaced. The only other notable issue here is leaking driveshaft oil seals, allowing gearbox lubricant to disappear over time and resulting in worn differential bearings. Unusually, the gearbox has a dipstick so be sure to check the level regularly.
