‘Only swap the engine if you’ve got a basic 1.1’

- CHARLIE CALDERWOOD STAFF WRITER

‘Even 1300 Escorts can be made enjoyably brisk with basic tuning, but with rising values, I would only look to swapping an engine if you’ve got a tired basic 1.1 or a wreck. The MkI is all about savouring the experience of a light, easy to drive rear-drive classic, so play to this strength. Firming up the suspension and fitting better brakes will improve control, allowing you to experiment with the car’s limited power and low grip. Safety and reliability mods will always improve the general ownership experience, but be wary of anything irreversible.’
