Value My Classic
WHO David Walters WHAT 1986 Audi Coupé Quattro MILES 236,000 PROVENANCE Owned from new MODS None HOW MANY LEFT? 68 on the road
HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD IT?
I bought it new from Mill Garages Audi, Sunderland in 1986 after trying unsuccessfully to buy one from my local Audi dealer in Durham. I drove a Hillman Imp at the time and they wouldn’t take me seriously. Mill’s salesman, Rod Cardy, found me the car I wanted. I still have his business card and all the documents relating to the car over the past 32 years – except petrol receipts! It is the nonturbo version, which I prefer, having owned three ur-quattros.
HOW MUCH HISTORY?
The car is used regularly all year round – I don’t think of it as a classic. It has taken my family around Europe on numerous occasions including the CCW rally to Disneyland Paris in 2007. A photo of the car appeared in your report. It’s currently insured for £5000. I tried to raise it to £10,000 in November 2016 as Coupé quattros were being advertised for that price, but my insurer refused and the policy only allows revaluations every two years.
WHAT’S LEFT TO DO ON IT?
The driver’s seat bolster is worn – a common fault – so I have stitched a patch over the frayed area. Audi Tradition recently restocked the material so one day I may have it repaired properly. Everything else is fine and it still has the original radio and speakers. I have removed the sill covers a couple of times to check they’re OK.
HAS IT BEEN MODIFIED?
I’ve kept the car standard and had it serviced to the Audi service schedule, at least once a year. The side trim was removed when the car was resprayed about 20 years ago and I’ve kept this in the loft.
