BUYING WITH CONFIDENCE
CONCOURS £200K- 425K+ 1 CHECK THE NUMBERS
Burgeoning values have increased those of cars being restored. Originality and matching numbers are essential elements, though.
2 HISTORY LESSONS
History and provenance are also paramount for a top evaluation. These being Astons, only the most interesting histories stand out – and many actually have fascinating ones.
3 RARITY HELPS
The highest prices are paid for the rarer, manual cars. A top Volante might be £325,000, while the Coupés breach £400,000. Prince of Wales cars go much higher.
GOOD £100K- 225K 1 SPOT THE ROT
Corrosion repairs are costly to put right. The front of the sills and base of the A- and B-pillars must be solid. Get it professionally inspected.
2 SOME MODS ARE OK
Original features add desirability, but some tweaks are admissible. For example, early DBS wire wheels are not very strong, so they tend to be replaced with tougher items.
3 COOLNESS COUNTS
Similarly, the Vantage’s blankedoff radiator grille causes high running tempertures, but damage occurs rapidly if it overheats. Check coolant quality carefully.
USABLE £75K- 125K 1 SHABBY’S NOT CHIC
There aren’t many rough Aston Martins around. Interior retrims may require expensive materials (leather headlining, for example).
2 TAKE IT FOR A SPIN
Check that it’s had regular use. Torqueflite automatic gearboxes develop problems when parked up, and seized inboard brakes heat the differential oil causing leaks.
3 MIND THE GAPS
Major repairs made years ago might not be of a quality that reflects the car’s current value. Inspect for poor welds and filler, and ask to see service and repair paperwork.
PROJECT £50,000+ 1 HOW BRAVE ARE YOU?
Some restorations will be sixfigure jobs if done professionally, so you really need to know what you’re getting into. Talk to other owners.
2 PARTS SUPPLIES
Bespoke orders and the lack of spares vehicles can make faithful recreation difficult. Before you buy, find out what’s missing and try to source replacement items.
3 WIDEN YOUR SEARCH
Dry overseas climates can be a source of solid cars. Don’t buy unseen, but the cost of travel to inspect the car, and the transport to bring it home may be worth it.
