Peter Pfister’s Javelin has appeared at the resto show every year since its 2014 inception at different stages of its restoration on the Jowett Car Club’s stand. The standard of the restoration is breathtaking – though Peter insists that it isn’t quite finished yet – but Peter drove it 800 miles to the show from his home in Switzerland. It just goes to show that restoration isn’t just about ending up with a shiny car, but having something you can enjoy and which makes people smile.

This terrifying project in progress – rather than a beautiful completed restoration – gets my vote. Mark O’Kearney owns four Austin Atlantics and usually does his own welding, but he entrusted this one to metal master Emlyn Bowdler. His exact recreation of the complex floorplan sections is unbelievable. We also liked Mark’s attitude to what he reckons will be a three- or fouryear project. ‘I love these rare cars. No way could I have let this one get scrapped.’

Having been told by editor David Simister that I wasn’t allowed choose a steam wagon as my car of the show, I plumped for this Saab 900 Carlsson instead. I know I already have a 900 Turbo, but the Carlsson is special; a limited edition ( just 600) tribute to rally driver Erik with additional power, colour-coded bodykit and oversized spoiler. This black one’s done over 300,000 miles on its original engine, but still looks great. It has gone through a couple of turbos, though...
