TRANSPORT NOSTALGIA: GW Railwayana Auctions, Pershore High School, Worcesters­hire, 17 March It was worth staying to the end of the Railwayana, Advertisin­g, Poster and Motoring Auction at Pershore on Saturday, 17 March, as that was where you could find some particular­ly fine automobili­a items among the 560 lots of mainly rail-related offerings.

Of the City of London EC3 china glass street signs in their original zinc-plated steel frames in this event, the St Mary Axe example was the best seller at a hammer price of £460, with Lombard Court following at £380, and Billiter Square at £260. A more modern City of Westminste­r Derby Gate SW1 enamel sign was sold for £50.

Two enamel motoring advertisin­g signs that performed well were a good condition Castrol Wakefield Motor Oil British Owned example and a green and white Power Petrol, that made £280 each. A Firestone Tyres ‘Most miles per shilling’ England and Wales road map enamel sign was away for £220, likewise an Avon British Tyres advertisin­g enamel. A Lodge Plugs example made £150, while a Gargoyle Mobiloil Vacuum Oil Company sign reached £140.

Six petrol cans – three restored and three in original condition – made £200, with the selection including BP Shell-Mex, Esso, National Benzole, Pratts, Redline and Shell Motor Spirit.

A Shell petrol globe reached £150, a circular enamel Guaranteed Esso Petrols sign sold for £180, while a double-sided RAC sign realised £120.

Also in this sale there were several bus-related signs and posters, plus – for the commercial vehicle fans – a framed and glazed Pickfords Depositori­es poster that sold for £170.

The next GW Railwayana transport collectors’ sale at Pershore will be held on Saturday, 14 July.
