WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

Following the normal Ford trait, the Cologne V6 turns over twice then leaps to life. The Sierra gearbox has the typical, slightly vague selection that takes a while to get familiar with. The motor is lusty, while the handling is adept, being sure-footed and planted, with effective brakes to match. The tailpipe is larger than standard but the sound is certainly not offensive. Our test drive revealed no unwanted rattles or knocks. All round, this was as pleasurable a driving experience as when this Sierra left the showroom 35 years ago.

BODYWORK CHECK

The Strato Silver metallic is bright and the only blemish is a tiny dent on the offside rear panel. Even the closest inspection failed to discover any filler or rubbing marks. The black plastic trims are also damage free, even the bumpers corners are pristine. We assume they’ve been replaced. The ‘pepperpot’ wheels have been very well restored, and are fitted with tyres that have seen little mileage. The underneath looks corrosion-free.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

The cabin would benefit from the return of its original audio unit, which has been replaced with a modern CD player. It’s overall very clean and the roof lining is taut, while the hand-operated tilt/slide sunroof appears correct. The carpets are clean, courtesy of some original Ford over-mats but there’s one tiny stain on the driver’s seat base that should clean away. The base of the small cubby hole on the passenger side needs to be re-secured, but the dash is excellent, with bright orange trim around the binnacle and steering wheel centre.

UNDER THE BONNET

The aftermarket alarm is prominent inside the engine bay and is the only item that looks out of place. Fluids are clean and all the levels checked were correct. No leaks or stains are apparent. The documentation is comprehensive; it seems this car has never been restored but just had years of constant attention to keep it looking so good. The maintenance record includes all the MoTs back to 1988, which verify the mileage. The pack also includes the original bill of sale, stamped service and audio books plus a large collection of invoices, along with details of the XR Owners’ Club that previous owners have joined.

THE CCW VIEW

Despite imperfect originality, this XR4i is a credit to its past owners, and has clearly been very well cared for. Any new owner will enjoy the limelight as it is certainly a head-turner. Considering the ‘hooligan’ status associated with these Fords in their prime, to find an example that is almost factory-fresh is rare. As good to drive as it looks, any new owner can take pleasure in the fact that this XR4i is one of the best on UK roads.
