PORSCHE SHOW HITS A MILESTONE
Increased classic turnout helps to make seaside gathering the biggest yet
Classic Porsches, including 911s, 356s, 944s and Boxsters stretched more than a mile down Llandudno’s historic Promenade at this bustling one-day charity event.
Porsche Club GB’s North Wales branch says that this free-to-attend show was the most successful in its history. More than 650 cars took part, with classics playing a big part in the 70-car increase on last year.
Regional branch organiser, Sue Taylor, says: ‘Porsche’s 70th anniversary has definitely been a factor in the increase in Porsches coming to Llandudno this year, but the great weather’s helped too, and we’ve had more owners hearing about the event and bringing their cars along, including many who aren’t club members.
‘Because we use both sides of the Promenade to line cars up there were effectively two linear miles of cars for people to see, so it’s really grown from this time last year.’
While Porsche’s more modern water-cooled offerings dominated the turnout the event, which raises funds for the Ty Gobaith children’s hospice, the increase in classic entries was obvious. These included five 356s – up from one example 12 months ago.
John Hughes, who took part in the seaside display with his 356, says: ‘This year’s event was huge. It just shows how important classic car shows are to the economy – this one’s brought so many people into North Wales.’
Baz Barnett, who drove up from Staffordshire in his 1982 944 Lux, adds: ‘Porsche is becoming much more popular as a marque with classic fans – there are still plenty of entry-level models that don’t cost that much and make it affordable for people to join in the fun.’
