Post office suffers ‘teething problems’ with MoT exemption
Post offices are experiencing teething problems with issuing the forms needed to declare classics over 40 years old as MoT exempt.
The Post Office acknowledged that ‘a small number’ of its branches did not have the updated V112 exemption forms needed to declare a pre-1978 classic as a Vehicle of Historic Interest (VHI). Other branches are giving customers out-of-date V112s missing the newly amended classification code for historic vehicles. It blamed a longerthan-expected ‘crossover period’ between the old V112 forms being phased out and the new amended V112 forms arriving at branches across the UK.
A Post Office spokesman says: ‘We apologise to any customers who have received incorrect forms or been unable to obtain forms from any of our branches that offer this service, this may have been in a crossover time period between old forms being removed and new forms being distributed.
‘DVLA provides this service through selected branches only. These branches are aware of the correct processes to follow when processing MoT exemption forms, and have also been reminded there is a new form to replace the previous version.’
Finding a Post Office with the correct V112s can be done online thanks to its branch finder; furthermore, those with internet access can now declare their classic as a Vehicle of Historic Interest during their application for historic tax. Of the 11,500 Post Offices in the UK, 5750 have the forms and training to receive and send V112 forms for processing – details of which can be found on its website by using its branch finder and then searching with the phrase ‘Add Vehicle Tax’
A word of warning from the DVLA: if you’re given an old V112 form by mistake, you cannot use the new declaration code - R - on an old form, as it will not be accepted.
