Review: Hartleys Auctions Collectors Sale, Victoria Hall, Ilkley, Yorkshire, 21 April

A couple of contrasting motor oil advertising signs were to be found among the varied lots in the Hartleys Auctions Collectors Sale held at Victoria Hall, Ilkley on 21 April.

A colourful 1929 Shell Motor Oils advertisement printed on tin with central oils chart surrounded by seven transport images was estimated at £200-300 and achieved an actual price of £270 (to which the buyer’s premium of 17.5 per cent plus VAT is added).

A Castrol Lubrication Service, painted aluminium with Castrol logos, sold for £70, below its lower estimate of £75.

This sale also had a most unusual section titled ‘Wurlitzer & Jaguar’, comprising two very different lots – a 1955 Juke Box and a 1999 Jaguar Sovereign V8.

The next Hartleys Auctions Collectors Sale at Ilkley is scheduled for 22 September.
