1986 WORLD CUP GARY LINEKER

-

This picture was taken in December 1985, just months before Lineker flew to Mexico for the 1986 World Cup, where he won the Golden Boot as top goal scorer for the tournament.

The Supra got another boost in power (to 161bhp) plus a few minor facelift tweaks the year before the car went off sale in 1986, so it is easy to see why Gary opted for the final and best version of the A60. It is fair to say he had an affiliation for most things Japanese when he finished his football career at Grampus Eight – which Toyota happens to own. Toyota used his ‘gentle sportsman’ image to market the Toyota brand in the early 1990s.

FUN FOOTBALL FACT Just before this picture was taken, England had qualified for the ’86 World Cup with a goalless draw against Northern Ireland and a 5-0 win against Turkey in the October. In that very match, Lineker scored one of his many international hat tricks.
