HOW TO IMPORT A BRIT BACK FROM AMERICA

-

‘J2s were mostly being exported until recently, but that tide has turned,’ says Lloyd Allard of Allard Sports Cars (01452 725666, allardsportscars.co.uk). ‘There are more available in America now, but it’s important to verify the car’s identity and watch out for replicas posing as originals. We’ve even come across two cars that, by accident, had ended up with the same identity.

‘Original spec adds value these days, so J2s that might have been through three different engines in the US are now often fitted with an original-spec Cadillac 331 upon returning to the UK.’

Sam Fretwell from TR Enterprises (01623 793807, trenterprises.com) regularly transports TRs from the USA. He says: ‘Most of the best were snapped up in the 1990s, but there are still some great finds if you’re prepared to put in the time. The Yanks have come to realise these cars’ values in the UK, so prices are going up in America, too. I recommend using a reputable shipping agent to help with the paperwork.’

Austin-Healey specialist Bill Rawles (01420 564343, rawlesclassiccars.co.uk) is familiar with most of the ’Healeys that have come into the UK over the years. ‘Most of the bargains are gone now, but you do occasionally find good ones. The most important thing is to get the car properly inspected, otherwise your chances of finding something worth having are slim. Mechanically they tend to be okay, but structurally they’re often bodged and filled, and proper restorations are rare in the US.’

❚ Check if the car’s been detuned for US rules.

❚ Talk to a specialist to find out if any changes need to be made to make it UK-legal.
