HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD IT?
I have owned the car since 1997 and it was our family vehicle prior to taking retirement in 2007. It was used to go on family holidays and all that. The car used to come in for servicing to the Volkswagen dealer where I worked. One day the customer complained that it had a fault where it would cut out and stall. I was tasked with looking at the vehicle and it broke down during the road test. Back at the workshop I diagnosed a faulty sender in the distributor. When the customer collected the car and I had reassured her that it was 100 per cent fixed, I asked her to let me know if she ever decided to sell it. About six months later I got a call and bought it for £2500.
HOW MUCH HISTORY?
The vehicle obviously has a full Volkswagen history and I have all the old tax discs and MoTs. I also have a letter from Volkswagen UK to say exactly when the vehicle was produced. It has had three previous owners.
WHAT’S LEFT TO DO ON IT?
The clutch biting point is very high, so that needs replacing. I also want to strip down the gearbox as I can sometimes feel a slight crunch on second gear when cold and if the gear is selected quickly.
HAS IT BEEN MODIFIED?
I fitted a power steering assembly from another Jetta MkII, along with an Austrian rear windscreen, which incorporates a high-level brake light assembly. I fitted fog lamps into the front bumper assembly. The car also has a slightly modified exhaust system: the front pipe in bigger bore size and the rest of the system is from a 16-valve Jetta – all original Volkswagen parts.
