Classic rally firm in takeover
Flying Scotsman organiser to be managed by the team behind LeJog
The Historic Endurance Rally Organisation (HERO) is taking over the management of all of the Endurance Rally Association’s (ERA) events.
Founded in 1988, the ERA has become famous for organising longdistance endurance events, such as the Peking to Paris Motor Challenge, and in Britain for events including the Flying Scotsman, a three-day rally aimed primarily at pre-war cars. HERO is best known for its LeJog classic rally between Land’s End and John O’Groats, and is also behind the RAC Rally of the Tests and 1000-Mile Trial.
This follows HERO’s integration of the Classic Rally Association in 2013, another rally organisation established by the late ERA founder Philip Young.
Chariman of HERO, Tomas de Vargas Machuca, said: ‘We are proud to be taking on the ERA’s portfolio of events. For HERO, this represents a significant expansion of our activities, especially longer distance endurance events, for which ERA has long been a market leader and innovator.’
It appears the ERA name will remain in use for the long-distance rallies for which it is best known, though further
details are to be announced in the autumn. Director of ERA, Jane Young, said: ‘It is with a heavy heart that I have to accept that, to preserve Philip’s legacy and to allow ERA to grow, a new custodian must take it over and I wish HERO every success.’ heroevents.eu endurorally.com
