NEW OR OLD?

New TV show seeks to answer classic debate

-

Racing driver Rebecca Jackson and London Motor Museum owner, Elo King, will go head-to-head in a new TV show coming to Dave to decide whether modern or classic cars are best once and for all.

Each episode will see a member of the public seeking the advice of the two presenters, who will then suggest two options each to the car shopper, with Jackson hoping to prove that modern offerings best fit the buyer’s budget and requirements, and Elo advocating classic buys instead.

We talk to Elo ( left) and Rebecca (right) about the show and their own relationship with cars.

CCW Elo, you’re asking people to choose a classic car over a modern one – do you think using a classic as your daily driver is possible? EK Classic cars were not built to be classic. In their time they were built as everyday cars, so why can’t they be used as daily drivers? CCW What do you think classic cars offer that’s missing in modern cars? EK Classic cars offer a passion for driving. A connectivity with the machine and the road. Modern cars are like tools, they have no passion. CCW What sort of cars can we expect to see in the series? RJ We can’t say specifically yet, but it’s very varied, with budgets from £6000 to

£100,000 and buyers looking to use them as daily drivers or weekend toys.

EK You’ll see everything and every genre of classics, from post-war machines to modern classics. CCW Are you ever tempted by the classic options Elo brings on the show, Rebecca? RJ Well, the funny thing is, I own three classics myself: a Land Rover Defender; an E36 BMW M3; and a Toyota MR2 MkII. So yes, there have been a few classics on the show I’d very much like to take home. CCW Might there be a historic motor sport debut on the way? RJ I actually started racing in a Porsche 924, which was a great beginner’s car, but I haven’t driven anything old since. I can definitely see the appeal in racing historics, though the cars obviously aren’t as safe. The energy and enthusiasm around it is definitely increasing though and I think that’s only going to surge with the way powertrains are going in terms of electrification. People miss the noise, I think!

❚ Modern Wheels or Classic Steals will air on 11 September on Dave, a time slot is yet to be confirmed.
