Modern classics still in large supply

Variety – and catering – key to good sales results

- EDWARD BRIDGER-STILLE, HISTORICS

‘It is important to cater to the market you are known for’

Halfway through the year, how do you see the market going? Does it have a positive or more of a re-adjusted’ feel? Do investors still play a big part at your sales?

The marketplace is showing a more considered approach at the moment. It is noticeable that well-priced cars of quality will make the money, while investment-quality examples will sell but at a more ‘adjusted’ level. Gone are the days when a Ferrari 246 Dino was worth £300,000. This has been the position for some time now.

Does uderstanding the market as it stands make for a more successful auction?

It is important to cater to the market you have developed and are known for. At Historics we have a wide range of accurately priced classics and this regularly translates into strong sales figures. Customers can be assured of good product knowledge, as well as the foresight to be able to offer a wide range of modern classics. These are the future after all.

And that means a future for the ‘old favourites’?

MGBs will always be a perennial favourite; cheap to run with widely available spares behind you and enormous club backup.

Will the interest in modern classics continue?

The Jaguar F-Type and MGF are both made in large numbers and inexpensive to purchase. They are currently entry-level modern classics and easy to acquire. Modern Mercedes-Benzes are the next marque to pick up their skirts and begin to run. Well made, reliable and with strong club support, the appeal is obvious.

What makes a good sale?

Opinion is polarised as to what makes a sale good (product aside, of course). The Ivy-League auction houses tend to offer bar services only, as their footprint is eye-wateringly expensive and every metre has to be accountable, with customers ultimately footing the bill. You will tend to find that catering facilities are offered where larger set-ups are in place. It is ideal, of course, to be able to offer this, as well as free parking and public transport. An all-round service is clearly desirable, especially when customers want to spend a large portion of their day with us. Historics has teamed up with the Brooklands Museum and benefits from a full range of facilities, as well as an awardwinning museum experience for those who may not wish to spend the whole day at auction.
