Mercedes-Benz 190E 2.0

- Grant Ford

In theory, a well-maintained Merc will last a lifetime, so it’s only right to expect good things from this 2.0-litre 190E. It starts instantly, with no unwanted noises. The assist steering works perfectly and, once on the move, the fourspeed autobox performed crisp changes without any jerks. The 1996cc unit offers plenty of performance, backed by powerful brakes. While the handling is hardly sporting, this Mercedes is unruffl ed when pushed through the corners, and drives in the way you’d expect a well-sorted 190E to. The lower plastic body panels can be subject to stonechips and lacquer peel, but this example has no blemishes, unusual for the miles travelled. The body itself is very straight with a single stonechip at the rear of the nearside front wheelarch, just above the twotone lower panel. The rest of the bodywork is in superb order and has been looked after by the three previous owners. The nearside front and offside rear wheel trims have small kerb scuffs, while the rear screen surround’s satin fi nish has paint fl aking off , but it’s an easy fi x.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

The 190E’s interior is hardwearing and of quality construction. We found overmats on the carpetting and it’s doubtful much of the original carpet has seen daylight for years. This example came fully stocked with add-ons, including an electric sunroof, windows and door mirrors; all operated correctly when tested, as did the Blaupunkt Blue Spot radio/ cassette and electric aerial. In fact, every gauge and switch did the job it was installed for. The driver’s seat shows minimal wear for more than 120,000 miles, while the original first aid kit remains under the rear parcel shelf. The veneer around the gear selector is free from any stains or peeling.

UNDER THE BONNET

The engine bay is in fair order, but could be improved. The inner panels would respond to a few hours of wash ’n’ polish, while the block itself is free from oil leaks. The residue from a rocker cover leak in the past will clean away and the covers themselves would benefit from a few coats of satin black. The history file has a Mercedes dealer service record for every stamp up to 2009 and 102,000 miles travelled. From then, Mercedes specialist invoices and MoT certifi cates confi rm the usage to date. Minor repair invoices are included, listing parts purchased, along with the original instruction manual.

THE CCW VIEW

Is the 190E still worthy of its classic status? We believe so. This 2.0-litre example combines superb engineering with great value, bringing peerless Merc quality to anyone on a budget, and is well worth checking out.
