‘It’s the earliest MG to have survived in a complete and unmolested state’ RICHARD BIDDULPH
A1925 MG saloon said to be the oldest known complete production example of the marque is for sale. Essex-based Vintage and Prestige Classic Cars is advertising the Bullnose Super Sports Salonette 14/28hp, formerly an exhibit at the Ramsgate Motor Museum, for £85,000.
Richard Biddulph, managing director, said: ‘It’s the earliest
MG in the world to have survived in a complete and unmolested state, except for the one-off, nonproduction special known as “Old Number One”.’
The car for sale, chassis 90553, left the Morris assembly line on 8 May, 1925. After bodywork was fitted and modifications carried out it was registered in Berkshire on 9 December, 1925.
The MG was displayed at Ramsgate Motor Museum from the 1970s until 2005 when Christie’s auctioned its contents. Bearing a plaque stating it to be ‘The MG Super Sports Morris Oxford’ and MG Morris Garages door kick plates, the substantially original car has recently been overhauled and refurbished by a top specialist, and appeared at MG90 in 2014.
MG Car Club president John Day adds: ‘This lovely 14/28 is a very well-known car to the Vintage Register of the MG Car Club. It is a charming vehicle with superb history and provenance. It also benefits from a recent refurbishment to an extremely high standard by a Vintage MG specialist. It is the sort of car that will appeal to the serious collector who wishes to own a unique part of the early MG story.’ Nick Larkin ❚ vandp.net
