S-types are 1960s Jaguars, too!

-

You would think that a car which has been in existence for over 50 years, made by a prominent car manufacturer, and still with examples on the road today would be recognisable.

I own a 1967 Jaguar S-type, and I am getting increasingly frustrated with the insurance industry and parts manufacturers who seem to think there has only ever been one Jaguar S-Type, and this is the later 1999 model.

The number of times I’ve logged onto a parts web site only to discover that among the Jaguar models they stock parts for, the S-type only exists as the later car. It is a different car to the similar-to-look-at Jaguar Mk2, as most of the body panels are different. True, a lot of the mechanical parts are common but not all. Next is the insurance industry. The comparison sites are useless as none of them that I have tried recognise the classic S-type, only the later car. So then I move on to individual companies and their websites. I am tired of ‘get an instant quote’, ‘easy to use’ or ‘fast and efficient’. Once again I hear a familiar story.

Jaguar has not helped by having two models with the same name, although nearly 30 years apart. It is surely not beyond the wit of man to programme websites with classic S and modern S types – simply use the dates!

I really hope the industry can get its act together on this one.

I can sympathise. My Mazda Eunos Roadster, being a 1990 car imported in ’98, continually foxes parts suppliers who think it’s a much later model – Ed.

?? ?? Simon Biggs owns one of these – but specialists reckons he owns a 1990s Jaguar.
