WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?

This low-mileage car starts instantly, and the additional Smiths oil pressure gauge shows a healthy 50lb at idle. The clutch engages at just over half travel and the gear selection proves to be precise, without excessive effort. The overhauled brakes are excellent and the only issue on the move is that the steering wheel is slightly off centre.

BODYWORK CHECK

The extensive history shows no details of restoration; longterm storage explains why the majority of the finish is original. Panel fit is excellent but careful inspection found evidence of a slight repair to the top of offside rear quarter panel, touch-ins to the driver’s door behind the opening handle, while the offside rear door inner edge has a small blemish. Waxoyl protection has also been re-applied to all areas recently and underneath is in remarkable condition, with no signs of any welding repairs. The chrome is thought to be original and certainly not requiring any repairs or replacement, presenting minus all but the smallest of blemishes.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

Although the years have not induced any sagging, unfortunately there’s a slight burn mark (thought to be from a soldering iron) apparent on the passenger seat base. Carpet wear is minimal as protective mats have largely done their job – a small area in the passenger footwell has become a little thinner. The accessory centre console is home to a Sony CD player. The faux veneer trim dash covering is unmarked with a matching additional threedial display, which contains oil pressure, clock and amps. All dials, gauges and switches work, even the original Lucas heated rear screen, which often failed in period.

UNDER THE BONNET

The bay area enjoys a paint finish on a par with the exterior and the engine block is very clean and minus any leaks. The V4 idles smoothly and it’s free from tappet noise and knocks, with the stainless exhaust system offering a pleasant hint of sportiness. The recent total brake overhaul included new lines and copper piping, leaving little to be improved in this area. The history file is comprehensive and explains this car’s limited use, with invoices and service stamps confirming 7798 miles travelled in 1972. By 1983 the MoT records 23,215 miles, soon after the original first owner retired from driving. His family put the car in heated storage until 2012, when it was sold.

THE CCW VIEW

It’s fair to say the Corsair’s styling wasn’t to everyone’s taste in the Sixties and that remains true today, while the V4 became somewhat of a ‘Marmite’ engine. Nevertheless, this example has no doubt led a charmed life, with previous owners ensuring it remains in superb order.
