With the manual choke applied, the 545cc twin fires instantly; the choke is then returned in stages. The five-speed gearbox proves to be precise with the clutch bite at just over half travel. The engine is positioned under the floor, just in front of the rear axle and sounds to be in full health, but we did notice a slight exhaust blow that will be corrected prior to sale.

BODYWORK CHECK

The light blue finish is factory; a special order maybe, but certainly via the official dealer network. The chrome finish on the door handles has light pitting while the exterior paint finish is in remarkable. A touchin has been applied to a mark within the offside door opening and the same applies to a stone chip on the front edge of the roof. The driver’s door opening has been subject to a couple of entry/exit marks and the rear bumper has a slight ‘nick’ to the rubber. The underside is rustand weld-free.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

Basic and brown best describes the interior, but it’s complete, including the original floor coverings in the cab and the loading area. There are unmarked floor coverings due to additional carpet protection and beneath those, original blue paint that hasn’t seen daylight for years. The roof lining near the rear loading door has two small marks while the driver’s door panel’s plastic storage pocket is torn. Milestone will look to repair this common problem. Both side-loading doors slide and lock correctly while the tailgate supports itself in the open position; struts often lost strength after a few years.

UNDER THE BONNET

In this case under the floor; four bolts release the panel and allow access to the top of the small twin-cylinder powerplant. It’s a very reliable engine provided oil levels are maintained, although it’s not the easiest unit to work on. The history file goes back to the original purchase from the Honda agent in Dorset in April 1987, the sales brochure contains the handwritten figure of £3750, matching the amount on the sales invoice. First owner Mr Hayward used this Honda sparingly during his 20 years as custodian, but the maintenance schedule was strictly adhered to. The original service book covers the period from 1987 to 2010 when 13,150 miles had been travelled; from there invoices and MoT certificates bring the schedule up to date. The pack also includes the owner’s and full workshop manuals.

THE CCW VIEW

This very unusual and rarely used Acty van would make a fascinating display at any classic event; especially if there’s a commercial bias. With little to correct, any new owner only needs to budget for regular maintenance. Grant Ford
