LOSE YOURSELF IN 1958
TRAGEDY AT MUNICH Manchester United had been competing in a European Cup match in Belgrade when, taking off after refuelling at Munich Reim airport, their aircraft hit slush on the runway and crashed, killing 23 of the 38 people on board and leading to the deaths of eight players. A simple two-faced clock was paid for by the ground committee and attached to the south-east corner of the Old Trafford stadium in tribute. SETTING THE STANDARD
The unfortunately initialled Subscriber Trunk Dialling makes its debut in the UK, meaning that people could dial long-distance without their call having to be routed via an operator. The service was first introduced in Bristol, but took more than a decade to spread across the country.
HITTING THE HUT
Pizza Hut was founded by two university students, brothers Dan and Frank Carney, in Wichita, Kansas. A second branch was opened six months later and the brothers started franchising in 1959. The rest is history, especially after PepsiCo acquired the business in 1977. The first UK restaurant opened in Islington in 1973.

Blue Peter, the legendary children’s television series, didn’t have one it made earlier because the programme was broadcast for the first time in October. Commissioned because there were no programmes for children aged between five and eight, the first two presenters were actor Christopher Trace and Miss Great Britain (no, not Valerie Singleton), Leila Williams (below).
