Surely it’s a Simca?

-

I think the car next to the Ford Classic in The Way We Were on Oakham in 1970 ( CCW, 5 September) is a Simca 1000, a design obtained from Fiat which was a rejected proposal for a larger four-door 600 model. The angular framed rear lights and rubber faced overriders of the 1969 facelift replaced the earlier round light units. The slightly raised corner edge of the waist line is similar to the treatment on the front luggage area above the headlights

and it is possible that both bonnet and engine cover were similar pressings on this boxy design. The Prinz had a straight waist line that ran completely round the car and had low-mounted horizontal rear light units.

Also, the cooling vents on the Simca were two longitudinal strips recognising the situation of the engine. The Prinz had two crossways vents towards the rear screen lower edge because the engine was transversely mounted.

The white Farina is a Morris Oxford, having the thick horizontal bars and single chrome side trim line.

A few questions arise about the Humber because it carries a 1963 Leicester registration but has all styling features of an earlier MkII. Perhaps it was repatriated from outside the UK (Channel Islands or British Forces) and gained the later registration then? The GB plate indicates subsequent use out of the country rather than being a requirement to be displayed in the fiercely independent county of Rutland. Malcolm Farmery, Leeds
