Two shades of green

1999 ROVER 200 BRM LE

With both of my VWs in for work, this year, the Rover has attended plenty of events and seen a lot of daily use.

One of those shows was when the gentleman’s racer took its place with the many cars on display at Baston Car and Motorcycle Show, just up the A15 from my home. Unlike most of the car shows around here, this one isn’t exclusively for classics and includes all eras of vehicles including local dealers with brand new cars.

The only other car present with a BRM link and orange nose was one of the rare Lotus Elan BRM coupés that were marketed by Mike Spence Ltd of Maidenhead; understandably, it was trailered to and from the event.

At Baston, a member of the Spalding and East Elloe Classic Car Club recommended taking the car to the Sleaford Classic Car & Motorcycle Show, which had a section catering for post1987 cars in addition to older vehicles. This proved to be a good call and V844 RBK ended up being lined up between a 1991 Mitsubishi GTO 3000 and a 1988 TVR 350i. The Spalding group’s varied selection opposite was the deserved winner of the Club section.

The following morning was the second AGA Classic Car Breakfast meet of the year at Oundle Wharf; this is always a good social gathering with a mix of great vehicles. It’s a superb way of raising money for charity over a mug of coffee and a bacon roll.

Fortunately the Rover has been in good form though I’ve taken the opportunity to sort out some welding on both sills. Currently in primer, this now needs fettling, spraying and lacquering.

The colour scheme for the Rover 200 BRMs is Brooklands Green, not British Racing Green as some believe. However, when I recently had a new automatic roller door fitted to my garage, BRG was one of the colour choices available – it goes really well with the car, you know!
