Peugeot 406 Coupé

- JAMES SADLIER MANAGING EDITOR

I’d always wanted a Peugeot 406 Coupé for its sleek iconic design, but had no idea how well it would drive until I owned one. I had spent a while searching for a diesel variant so I would get more miles for my gallon. After owning a Ford Puma, I knew that any kind of 406 would reward me with a higher level of performance than what I was used to, so I wasn’t too desperate for a 3.0 V6.

Buying one for only £900, I did expect some issues but – touch wood – I’ve not had any major problems during the first five months of ownership. The drive is so smooth, the interior both luxurious and comfortable – this car is giving me so much back for my money.

The only real issues so far have been faulty headlamp bulbs and a few noticeable marks on the bodywork, which I find more of as time goes by! Previous owners have clearly used the bumpers enough to cause some slight damage. So I’ve spent the last few months sourcing some replacement parts that I can respray, as I just can’t find any in the same colour as my 406. I’d also like to get the piping on the driver’s seat looked at because it’s been well worn by previous owners.

Aesthetic fixes aside, the car just drives beautifully, especially on long trips. Everything feels effortless, with smooth gearchanges and a fuel tank that you don’t have to refill for 700 miles. Less time spent at fuel stations for me!

What I also love about this car is that you just don’t see them on the road any more. They’ve become such rare beasts that it does make you feel like you’re driving something that’s rather special.

I do love the regular Peugeot 406, but this Coupé is so different on the outside that I think many an untrained eye wonders what it is.

The only slight concern on the horizon is that its February MoT is fast approaching. I’m keeping my fingers crossed!
