INSPECT THE HISTORY

Given the prices being asked for DB2s, history and provenance are crucial. Be sure to check the chassis number against factory records, but proving the originality of an engine isn’t straightforward according to specialists; the number is stamped on the timing case cover, which might not relate to the rest of the unit. Speaking to an Aston expert before committing is the best advice we can give.

ENGINE HEALTH CHECK

The engine can prove to be rather fragile, so it’s important to establish its internal condition with compression and leakdown tests. Low oil pressure and evidence of cylinder head gasket leaks are a worry, because an expert re-build can cost thousands. The rest of the running gear will suffer if neglected, so make sure that the suspension and brakes have an unimpeachable maintenance record.

CHECK THE CONDITION

Epic bills will result if the chassis and aluminium panels require restoration, so don’t be satisfied until a marque expert has given them the all-clear. Interior condition is equally important and a re-trim will need doing by someone who knows these cars, because buyers demand perfection when it comes to originality. Although most body and trim parts can be sourced or re-made, it will come at a significant cost.
