The car starts first time with minimal assistance from the manual choke and has a strong, smooth idle. The B-series engine is a peach, providing a smooth power curve without any hesitation or flat spots and strong acceleration. Equally, the gearbox and clutch feel sturdy and gear selection is positive, with each gear engaging fluidly. The steering is accurate and there is no free play in the wheel. Handling is confidence-inspiring and the car corners well thanks in part to new front and rear suspension components, including new rear dampers. The brakes have recently had a complete overhaul with new discs, pads, calipers and master cylinder, but there is some excessive travel in the pedal; a bleed of the system should iron out these issues, however.

BODYWORK CHECK

Converted from plastic to chrome bumpers and resplendent in blemish-free black paint, this MG certainly looks the part. The dark paintwork contrasts brilliantly with all of the chrome pieces on the car (of which there are many), including a smart boot rack. This aesthetic is carried over to the wheels; these are black with chrome rims and in great condition. All four tyres are matching and appear to be wearing evenly with plenty of tread left on them. The car is corrosion-free on the whole, save for some slight blistering on the rear bumper next to the nearside overrider. The new hood is flawless and fits perfectly.

HOW’S THE INTERIOR?

The interior looks fresh and there are no obvious areas of damage or wear; the seats are in especially great condition. Closer inspection reveals some minor cracking to the face of the dashboard, but the dashboard itself is solid. The carpets are clean and dry, the door cards are tidy and all of the equipment and instruments work as they should. The water temperature gauge is a recent replacement.

UNDER THE BONNET

The car has been treated to a full service and new parts including half shaft seals, fuel sender, radiator and thermostat, voltage stabiliser, fuse box, spark plugs, HT leads and heater control valve. A reconditioned stainless steel exhaust system has also been fitted. The engine bay is clean and free from oil and the engine itself presents well. A visual inspection underneath confirms that the suspension and braking components appear new.

THE CCW VIEW

This honest, usable classic is mechanically sound with a freshly serviced, strong and healthy engine and a good gearbox. It is ready to be enjoyed straightaway as it is, not squirrelled away in a garage somewhere.
