POLICE INVESTIGATING CLASSIC SHOW CRASH

Chevy Chevelle’s driver ‘lost control in front of onlookers’

-

Police are investigating a crash in which a classic American muscle car slid off the road and hit a garden wall, damaging the car’s nearside front wing.

The incident happened when the driver, who had borrowed the 1970 Chevrolet Chevelle in question, ignored a turn left sign when leaving the Doncaster Classic Car and Bike Show on 30 June. He lost control of the car on Town Moor Avenue in front of onlookers, many of whom filmed the incident.

Speaking on behalf of his father, the owner of the Chevelle, Jamie Jackson

said: ‘It was a friend who was trusted to borrow the car for a charity event. It wasn’t my dad driving. We’re on with building it back up and getting it back on the road as soon as possible.’

Organisers of the show, the Rotary Club of Doncaster St George’s – which has raised thousands of pounds for charity and brings more than 900 classics to the area – is hoping that there will be a police presence at the event next year.

Rotary Club of Doncaster St George’s spokesperson, Nigel Thorley, said: ‘ We have never had anything like this happen in 13 years. The incident did not take place on the event site, and the driver ignored four foot-high signs at the exit asking motorists to turn left and avoid traffic conditions.

‘He was obviously showing off, and it’s fortunate that the consequences weren’t far worse.’

The car, which Nigel said had attracted plenty of admiration at the show, had been repainted only recently.

A South Yorkshire Police spokesman said enquiries were ongoing to establish ‘the nature of the driving prior to the collision’. Nick Larkin rotary-ribi.org
