Three-page special
ith more than 109,000 visitors and 10,000 privately-owned cars on display, this year’s Silverstone Classic broke all records, despite some challenging weather conditions for racing drivers and classic fans alike.
With 21 races to savour, there was plenty of entertaining on-track action. However, it was the curtainclosing Mini Celebration Trophy that was the race of the weekend, with BTCC star Adam Morgan winning in a Morris Mini Cooper S.
Ford cars dominated the Historic Touring Car Challenge while the colossal 8-Litre Bentley 3/8 fittingly won the Bentley Centenary Trophy for Pre-War Sports Cars.
WOf the numerous anniversary parades, the most poignant was Sir Jackie Stewart’s golden milestone with his Matra MS80-02 .
Sir Jackie said: ‘The Matra is a special car to me and it’s always a real thrill to be back in it. To have the Matra back on the Silverstone circuit 50 years after that win brings back so many happy memories.’
Silverstone Classic CEO Nick Wigley said: ‘The racing is just part of the extravaganza that is today’s Silverstone Classic. This year’s event attracted an unprecedented crowd and we’d like to thank everybody for coming, as well as the drivers, marshals, exhibitors, entertainers, performers and everyone who made the event a success.’
