Jim Clark tribute helps to attract more than 500 classics to Scotland’s celebration of speed
The 2019 Bo’ness Revival had something for everyone – epic on-track action in challenging conditions, a classic show featuring more than 40 car clubs and 500 cars, a fun Carkhana driving competition and a parade of road cars associated with the greatest racing driver of his era, Jim Clark.
Clark’s victory at the 1959 Bo’ness Hillclimb was commemorated in several ways. A special class in the hillclimb, run on a handicap system, was limited to cars of a type that Clark raced. On Saturday, a tour ran from Bo’ness to the new Jim Clark Motorsport Museum in Duns, and on Sunday the Jim Clark Trust displayed a number of cars driven by the great man, including the last road car owned by him – a yellow LHD Lotus Elan S3. Those present included Jim Clark’s cousin, Doug Imrie, and renowned motorsport writer, Peter Windsor.
Heavy rain on the Saturday morning caused some headaches for both drivers and officials, including the loss on Saturday of the commentary system. The inclement weather meant that visitor numbers were a little down on 2018, but did nothing to dampen the spirits of the competitors or enthusiasts.
Appropriately enough – given Jim Clark’s famously long association with Lotus – the fastest time on both days was set by Andrew Patterson in his Lotus 61.
On behalf of the organisers, Cliff McKinnon said: ‘ With more than 120 entries in the hillclimb and over 500 cars, motorbikes and scooters on display on Sunday, this was the largest Revival to date.
‘ We’re already looking forward to next year’s event, provisionally scheduled for 5-6 September.’
