Daimler Six 4.0 SWB
WHAT’S IT LIKE TO DRIVE?
This Daimler starts instantly and the auto ‘box performs smoothly, even from cold. The 3980cc ‘six’ delivers seamless performance, the heavily assisted steering provides great feedback on the move and the suspension glides over all but the worst road surfaces. Grip levels are exceptional for such a heavy car, exuding confidence through the corners, although it’s better suited to distance cruising. The brakes supply assured stopping power and there are no unwanted noises or vibrations.
BODYWORK CHECK
The restoration and repaint carried out in 2011 was completed to an exceptional standard – enough to win prizes at many shows. There’s one small stone chip on the front edge of the bonnet, but the underside shows no signs of repair work within the even coat of protection and the smart factory wheels are all fitted with recent Kumho tyres.
HOW’S THE INTERIOR?
The beige leather that dominates the cabin shows little sign of age, even on the driver’s seat; it’s all supple with no signs of fading. Invoices show small parts of the walnut veneer have been replaced and the leather gear shift surround features a slight wear mark that will require a little dye to make perfect. The carpets are immaculate, having been protected by Daimler sheepskin overmats that also look new, while the dash, trim and switches are in showroom condition. The maze of instruments switchgear and the original factory audio all operate correctly.
UNDER THE BONNET
The engine bay has been prepared to show standard and needs nothing more than a bit of dusting. The sound deadening has rubbed and marked the front of the engine cover, but the front panel still features the factory stickers. The history fi le contains MoT certificates dating back to 1998 and the original dealer pack, including the all-important service book. Twenty-two annual services have been recorded, including the first 12 main dealer stamps up to 2006 at 44k miles. Invoices from 2011 total around £15k, all credited to the previous owner who renewed the timing chain, radiator, alternator, suspension and brakes. Original brochures and heritage certificate are also included, along with ownerwritten details of his time with this Daimler.
THE CCW VIEW
This Daimler is a lot of car for the money. Rarity is guaranteed, with fewer than 100 left on the roads, and you’d struggle to find a better-presented example. Overall, the car is very diffi cult to fault, thanks in no small part to the previous owner’s insistence on achieving – and maintaining – the highest standards.
